New Orleans, LA — It’s not every day you see a 60 on a tournament scoreboard, especially at a state championship. But that’s exactly what Brandt Garon and Stanley Watts Jr. pulled off today during the opening round of the 42nd Louisiana Four-Ball Championship at English Turn Golf and Country Club.

The Zachary-based duo went out early and lit up the leaderboard with a bogey-free 12-under-par 60, the lowest round in the history of the Louisiana Four-Ball Championship. The previous low was an 11-under 61 by Jack Abney and Bill Caldwell III back in 2013 at Money Hill, a record that had stood for more than a decade.

Garon and Watts Jr. birdied seven holes on the front nine, turned in 29, and added three more and an eagle on the back to break the record by one shot. Their round had no mistakes and very little wasted motion, just a clean, confident display of team golf that set the tone for a packed leaderboard.

Just one shot behind are Eric Hoffmann of Denham Springs and Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, who fired an 11-under 61 of their own. Lyons, a former LSU golfer, brought a steady presence to the pairing, delivering nine birdies on his own, and the two combined for 11 total to keep the pressure on the leaders.

Brady and Kyle Bennett sit in solo third after a 10-under 62, a round that came to life with the shot of the day. Brady made a hole-in-one on the par-3 8th, which was playing about 145 yards. The ace gave the brothers from Slaughter and Lafayette a surge of momentum and added a rare bit of flair to the championship’s history.

With just two shots separating the top three teams and several others lurking a few strokes back, Sunday’s final round is shaping up to be a shootout. Conditions are expected to remain soft and scorable, which means we could see more fireworks before this one is over.

The 42nd Louisiana Four-Ball Championship concludes tomorrow at English Turn.
