It was a blustery day at Koasati Pines Golf Club at the Coushatta Casino Resort on Thursday, making scoring conditions and club selection difficult for competitors in the first round of the 36th Louisiana Senior Amateur Championship. Kevin Hubbs of Denham Springs fired a two-under par 70 to take the first-round lead. Hubbs started his round on the 10th hole in the afternoon wave and played steady golf out of the gate, making six consecutive pars before carding his first birdie at the par 3 16th hole. Hubbs made par on 17 and 18, turning at one-under par. Hubbs’ second nine featured three birdies on holes 4, 7, and 9, with bogeys coming on # 2 and # 8. After day one, it’s an exciting and jampacked leaderboard featuring several former champions.
Only four other players finished in red figures on Thursday. Defending Champion Todd Doss of Mandeville and two-time Champion (2011 & 2018) Rod Baronet of Lecompte both carded impressive rounds of 71. Right alongside at one-under par is former MLB player Andy Sheets of Lafayette and Scott Sterbcow of Metairie.
Doss started his round on the 10th hole and got off to a fast start, making the turn in 32 with four birdies and zero bogeys on his first nine holes. It was a tale of two nines for Doss however, as he stumbled down the stretch with three bogeys. Nonetheless, the defending champion is right where he wants to be at the top of the leaderboard with 36 holes remaining. Baronet also started on the back 9 and had a similar round, shooting 33-38, and his round was highlighted by an eagle at the par 5 18th. Sheets also made an eagle on # 18 and carded two birdies on holes 3 and 15. His three bogeys occurred on holes 4, 10, and 11. Sterbcow was in the final group in the afternoon wave and had two birdies (# 6 & # 10) and one bogey (# 2) en route to a 71.
Four players are at even par: Shane Goff of Broussard, Peter D’Arcy of Shreveport, Doug Quienalty of Lake Charles, and Cade Hebert of Abbeville.
Three-time Louisiana Senior Amateur Champion (2007, 2010, & 2022) Bob Cooper of Monroe leads the Super Senior Division at one-over par 73. Trailing Cooper by two shots are: Craig Falgout of Lafayette, Tim Melancon of Baton Rouge, and Bill Land of Lafayette.
David Hebert of Broussard leads the Legends Division at one-over par 73. Michael Scurria and A.J. James are currently tied for second in the Legends Division at three-over par.
Tee times were delayed by one hour on Thursday due to inclement weather that moved across the area in the early morning hours, but the golf course dried out nicely and it was a pleasant day for golf. Koasati Pines played 6,589 yards for the Overall Championship and 5,973 yards for the Super Senior and Legends Divisions.
Starting Times will begin again at 7:30 a.m., off both #1 and #10 tees on Friday. The field will be cut to the low 60 scorers and ties following 36 holes for Saturday’s final round. This year’s Louisiana Senior Amateur Champion will earn an exemption into Final Qualifying for the 2026 U.S. Senior Open.
