John Humphries of Woodworth won an incredibly tight race over Eli Ortego of Broussard by just 5 points. Humphries was successful in defending his State Amateur Championship at Bayou Oaks at City Park in June. Humphries tied the low round of the Championship with a five-under par 67 on Sunday to shoot a four-round total of nine-under par 279 to win by one stroke over Ortego. Humphries will look to win three straight Louisiana Amateur Championships next July at Squire Creek Country Club. Humphries would be the first player to win three straight since Jimmy McGonagill of Shreveport won five in a row from 1948-1952, when the Championship was still match play. The LGA Senior Player of the year race saw Benton’s Robby McWilliams win for the second straight season over Bart Dornier of Metairie by 75 points. McWilliams’ was successful in defending both of his Championships from 2019.  McWilliams and partner Rod Baronet (who finished 4th in the POY race) defeated Burt Allen and Billy Joe Tolliver on the second playoff hole to win the Senior Four-Ball Championship at Southern Trace Country Club. Almost one month later, McWilliams would win the Senior Amateur Championship after shooting a three-round total of thirteen-under par 203 to win by four strokes over Eric Lavespere of Monroe. Lauren Aillet of Lafayette captured her fist LGA Women’s Player of the Year title in dramatic fashion. Aillet won by 7.5 points over Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge and Catherine Hodson of Baton Rouge. Aillet and partner Christina Popp of Lafayette finished tied for second at the Women’s Four-Ball Championship at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild which earned her 57.5 points. Aillet would then go on to finish solo second at the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta which gave her 85 points and secured her Player of the Year title. Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge captured her second consecutive Women’s Senior Player of the Year title after another strong season. Harrison started her season by making it to the Round of 16 at the Louisiana Women’s Amateur Championship at Tchefuncta Country Club. Harrison would then go on to win the Women’s Senior Amateur Championship at Southern Trace and the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta. With her two victories this season, Harrison has now won an incredible 16 LGA Championships in her career.   It was an outstanding 2020 season for all of our Players of the Year.  Congratulations to these players!
