Alexandria, LA – The 38th Louisiana Senior Four-Ball Championship teed off Friday at Links on the Bayou with blue skies and perfect scoring conditions, a welcome change after steady rain soaked Alexandria the day before. The field took advantage, going low in both the Overall and Super Senior divisions.
In the Overall Division (ages 50+), three teams posted matching 8-under-par 64s to set the pace. Billy Gabbert (Sulphur) & Eric Lavespere (Monroe), Rod Baronet (Lecompte) & Robby McWilliams (Benton), and Tommy Hodson (Baton Rouge) & Wayne Silva (Prairieville) all turned in bogey-free cards, proving that steady golf still rules in a four-ball format. Just a shot behind, Keith Bennett & Barry Cousler (Bossier City) lurk at 7-under 65.
The Super Senior Division (ages 65+) is equally tight. Tim Melancon & Jim Adams (Baton Rouge) posted 64 to grab the outright lead, edging out Randy Goff (St. Francisville) & Steven Inzenga (Baton Rouge) by a single stroke. At 6-under 66, Hal Wright (Shreveport) & Wade Botts (Marksville) and Bill Land (Lafayette) & Michael Scurria (Baton Rouge) remain firmly in the hunt heading into Saturday.
But the shot of the day belonged to Jim Adams, who authored the championship’s first highlight reel moment on the par-3 14th. Adams pulled an 8-iron from 138 yards and jarred it for his fourth career hole-in-one, a roar-worthy exclamation point to a round that already had him near the top of the leaderboard.
With packed leaderboards and more good weather in the forecast, Links on the Bayou is set to deliver a weekend of compelling golf as Louisiana’s best senior players chase the title.
