Earlier this month, LGA interns Abby Settoon (Marketing & Communications) and Marquis Dangerfield (Championship Operations) traveled to Liberty Corner, New Jersey, to attend the 2026 P.J. Boatwright Internship Summit hosted at the USGA’s national headquarters. Held from May 19–21, the summit brought together nearly 100 Boatwright interns from Allied Golf Associations across the country for three days of in-depth learning, networking, and exposure to the many pathways within the golf industry.
Firstly, we would like to recognize and thank P.J. Boatwright and his family for establishing this internship program. Their vision has created opportunities for young professionals to learn, grow, and gain invaluable experiences within the golf industry.
Throughout the week, we had the chance to hear about the future of golf and the incredible work being done to grow and improve the game at every level. From conversations about innovation and sustainability to discussions on how golf can become more accessible to future generations, it was inspiring to see the passion and commitment that so many people bring to the industry every day.
The experience began with a welcome reception inside the USGA Museum, where attendees explored the facility’s extensive collections, including a standout trophy room and exhibits highlighting the history of golf with different kinds of memorabilia. The museum was an amazing opening to what the rest of the week would hold.
We were provided with multiple presentations on the program's history and the relationship between the United States Golf Association and the Allied Golf Association. We heard from the Championship Administration, GHIN Directors, and got the chance to talk to the USGA staff in smaller groups, including merchandising, partnerships, broadcast, and handicapping. Attendees got the privilege of listening to and engaging in a panel of Boatwright Alumni and Donors.
When it comes to hands on activities, interns from around the country participated in a first tee and putting competition! Attendes took a road trip to Watchung Valley GC for a chance to see some of the work that goes into tournaments. We experienced greens work, rules demonstrations, and photography firsthand and learned how they worked.
One of the most impactful moments of the entire trip came during the closing remarks from USGA CEO Mike Whan. He spoke about how you do not always have to have your life perfectly planned out to be successful. Instead, success often comes from staying true to who you are, working hard, embracing opportunities, and being willing to take leaps of faith when they present themselves.
"What stood out to me most, however, were the people. I met individuals from all different backgrounds, experiences, and walks of life, yet everyone shared the same kindness, generosity, and love for the game. As someone still finding my place in golf, I was welcomed with open arms. Every conversation, every piece of advice, and every new connection left a lasting impression on me. The friendships and relationships built during this experience are something I will always value. Of course, it wasn't all meetings and presentations. One of my favorite parts of the week was participating in the First Tee Challenge and the putting contest. Those moments brought out plenty of laughs, friendly competition, and reminded me that golf is supposed to be fun. It was great to see people come together, enjoy themselves, and build connections outside of the professional setting. While I didn't win the putting contest, I also didn't finish last, which I'll count as a win in my book. When I first became involved with golf, I never imagined how much I would grow to love the game and the people within it. This experience only strengthened that passion. It showed me that there are countless ways to make an impact in golf, both on and off the course, and it reinforced my desire to continue building a career in and around this amazing industry."

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Daniel Magan and Tyler Riggin for putting together such an incredible and meaningful experience. The time, effort, and attention to detail that went into the program did not go unnoticed, and it played a major role in making the week so impactful for all of us. We are very thankful for the amazing opportunity to talk to some of the most impactful leaders at the USGA P.J. Boatwright Summit and are leaving New Jersey feeling inspired and motivated for the summer ahead! Thank you to the Louisiana Golf Association for providing us with this opportunity. To Logan Ray, the LGA staff, and everyone who has supported us along the way, thank you for allowing us to represent Louisiana during such a memorable experience.
The 2026 P.J. Boatwright Summit was a powerful reminder of how much opportunity exists within the game of golf and how much collaboration it takes to support it. Both Abby and Marquis returned to Lafayette with a newfound love for the work behind the game of golf and the people that come with it. We will cherish what we learned throughout the rest of our professional career.
