LAKE CHARLES, LA — The opening round of the 34th Louisiana Mid-Amateur Championship at Graywood Golf & Racquet Club concluded Friday as persistent rain and weather delays tested the field throughout the day.
Despite the challenging conditions and a delayed start, defending champion John Humphries made a statement in his opening round, firing a 7-under-par 65 to move up the leaderboard and put himself in contention for another Louisiana Mid-Amateur title. Humphries carded four birdies on his opening nine before adding another birdie and an eagle on the back nine to finish seven strokes under par.
Tied for second place, Jason Humphries and Shane Fontenot, who both finished the opening round at 6-under-par. Jason Humphries recorded an impressive seven birdies during his first round, while Fontenot finished with six birdies to join him near the top of the leaderboard.
The rainy conditions created a challenging schedule for the championship, despite the interruptions, the field was able to complete the opening round Friday. With the leaderboard tightly packed at the top, Saturday's second round will set the stage for the championship's final push.
The second round of the 34th Louisiana Mid-Amateur Championship will begin Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. with two waves utilizing a split-tee start. Players will continue to battle for the Louisiana Mid-Amateur title at Graywood Golf & Racquet Club as the championship heads into its second round.
