Choudrant, LA – Rick Maier, General Manager of Squire Creek Country Club, recently shared insights into his extensive career in the golf industry, reflecting on his
early passion for the game, his unique journey through turfgrass management, and his leadership philosophy. With over three decades of experience, Maier’s story highlights the evolving landscape of club management and golf course operations. Maier has dedicated his life to the game, and Louisiana golf is certainly better for it.
Growing up, golf played a pivotal role in Maier’s life, thanks to his first cousin, a talented high school golfer recruited by numerous colleges. His cousin not only introduced him to the sport but also made him his first set of clubs, sparking a lifelong passion. While Maier originally played baseball, he transitioned to golf in high school, a decision that led him to Mississippi State University.
“At Mississippi State, I met a lot of students in the Professional Golf Management (PGM) program, but I realized it wasn’t for me,” Maier said. “I discovered their turfgrass management program and quickly found my niche. That’s where my journey as a greenkeeper began.”
After graduating, Maier built an impressive career in turf management, working at prestigious clubs such as Southern Trace Country Club and The Country Club of Louisiana before eventually becoming Director of Grounds at Squire Creek. In 2010, he took on the role of General Manager, making a rare transition from agronomy to club management.
“Only about 2% of general managers come from a greenkeeping background, compared to 31% who are golf pros,” Maier explained. “But at heart, I’ll always be a greenskeeper. Growing Bermuda grass, maintaining course conditions—it’s what I love.”
“Ricky has impacted countless lives through his career in golf,” said LGA Executive Director Logan Ray. “His selflessness and passion for the game are inspirational. People often talk about leaving the game better than you find it, and Ricky has certainly gone above and beyond to do that. He lives it every day, and he treats everyone with respect. If you ask someone about their experience with Ricky, I guarantee it will put a smile on their face. Squire Creek’s hospitality is unrivaled and that doesn’t just happen without hard work. Ricky has been the driving force behind that and we are appreciative of his willingness to give back to the game.”
Beyond his expertise in turf management, Maier emphasized the importance of hospitality and creating a strong club culture and sense of community. “We have a great membership here at Squire Creek, and our advisory board is fantastic,” he said. “Our goal is to provide a top-tier experience, not just on the course but in every aspect of the club.”
When asked about his most memorable round of golf, Maier reflected on his early playing days, recalling a junior city championship where he performed well. “I wouldn’t say I’m a great golfer, but I love the game. I’ve been fortunate to play some incredible courses like Chicago Golf Club and Sand Hills, and I have a deep appreciation for course architecture.”
His leadership at Squire Creek continues to set a high standard in both course quality and member experience. As a self-proclaimed “golf junkie,” Maier remains dedicated to enhancing the game for members and the broader golf community.
