Metairie, Louisiana – June 5, 2026

It was another picture-perfect day for the second round of the 107th Louisiana Amateur Championship at Metairie Country Club. The Seth Raynor designed course once again held its own against the best players in the state. Carter Schmitt of Baton Rouge carded a two-under-par 68 on Friday to reach three-under-par for the championship and take a one-shot lead over three-time Louisiana Amateur Champion John Humphries of Woodworth. The leaderboard is jampacked with talented golfers and former champions looking to cement their place in Louisiana golf history and punch their ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship. It’s sure to be an exciting weekend ahead.

Schmitt started his round on hole #10 today and made a birdie out of the gate. After three consecutive pars, he made another birdie at the par-5 14th hole. Schmitt made four consecutive pars to close out his opening nine holes, turning in 33. He stayed steady to start his second nine holes, with back-to-back pars on holes 1 and 2. His first blemish on the scorecard came with a bogey at the par-3 3rd hole. He immediately bounced back with a birdie at the par-4 4th. “Middle of the green, two putting, staying solid,” Schmitt said about his strategy. “The par 3s on the front 9 ate my lunch but fortunately on the next holes I was able to hit a wedge close and make the putt.” To close the impressive round of 68, Schmitt went par-par-bogey-birdie-par. Schmitt, a rising senior on the University of Louisiana Lafayette men’s golf team, is looking to accomplish what his father Phil did in 1995 when he won the Louisiana Amateur Championship at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe with a score of 283.

Humphries has posted consecutive rounds of 69 and is in solo second place at two-under-par 138. Defending champion Connor Cassano of Baton Rouge responded in a big way with a bogey-free five-under-par 65 after an opening round 74 yesterday. Jeremey Gautreaux of Prairieville also improved his first-round score by nine shots (74-65) and is tied with Cassano in third place at 139. Lawrence Allan of Baton Rouge, fresh off a victory at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, is currently tied for fifth with Greg Berthelot of Baton Rouge. Berthelot, the 2011, 2022, and 2024 Louisiana Amateur Champion has carded 73 and 67 over 36 holes.

There’s a five-way tie for 7th place at one-over par 141:

2014 and 2015 Champion and U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Champion Grady Brame, Jr. of Baton Rouge (72-69), Price Butcher of New Orleans (70-71), James Holtsclaw of Shreveport (75-66), Taylor Boasberg of New Orleans (72-69), and Hudson Green of Bossier City (74-67).

Metairie Country Club played to a par 70 at approximately 6,705 yards on Friday. Director of Agronomy Drew Street and his crew have the course in superb condition, and it drew rave reviews from this field of the best amateur golfers in Louisiana. The par-4 9th (508 yards) “Road” was the most difficult on Thursday.

61 players made the cut at 11-over-par 151. Sixty-five-year-old Tommy Brennan of Covington was the eldest player to make the cut. Starting Times will begin again at 8:00 a.m., off both #1 and #10 tees on Friday.
