The LGA’s “Share Your Story” series highlights the moments and memories that make our golf community special. From personal milestones to unforgettable shots, these stories remind us why we love the game.
This month we’re spotlighting Larry Woods from Lake Charles, a member at Graywood Golf & Racquet Club, who had a once-in-a-lifetime moment earlier this year.
Graywood hosted a One Man Scramble where each player could take a second shot from anywhere. Larry had not been playing well leading up to the event and almost decided not to enter. He had just bought a Ping G425 3-wood and was still debating whether to keep it in the bag or go back to his Callaway Epic Speed. After some encouragement from friends, he joined the field at the last minute and stuck with the Ping.
On the par 5 10th hole, Larry found himself 201 yards out after his drive. He pulled the Ping 3-wood and hit one right at the green. Unsure if it had cleared the bunker, he decided not to take another approach shot. When he reached the green, he couldn’t find his ball in the bunker or on the surface. Just before taking a drop, he looked in the hole. There it was.
It was his first ever albatross.
Those three strokes gained helped him tie for second in his flight, which he went on to win in a scorecard playoff.
Larry’s story is a great reminder that sometimes the best memories in golf happen when you least expect them. We look forward to sharing more moments like his that make our LGA community so unique.
